This is a historic site and was owned by the rishton family who also owned the dunkenhalgh notably the catholic priest edward rishton who was tried and held at the tower of london. He was born 1550 and was tried 4 times later he was racked by the protestant forces at the tower of London. His other catholic priest companions where hung drawn and quartered. He did return home so this is where the name come from ponthalgh meaning bridge hall as pont is french. He went to france where he caught the plague and died in 1585. He probably lived in the cottage as there is a stone staircase which are very good for defence. The name plowthalgh is a misspelling. This is recorded in a historical book the old homesteads of accrington and district. Over the decades it has had many uses as a farm and stables in thd large barn and the cottage was last inhabited in the 1970s by the hendersons. It was first probably a hunting lodge when the wild deer where hunted. It has recently been heglected by its owners of the estate and is now sadly a ruin.

Plowtalgh Farm, probably one of the oldest building in Church. At a guess pre-industrial Britain 1750 or before? Please note this is private property, I didn't know at the time, but was a great opportunity to record how people once lived.
