I’ve been attending Hitchin Lavender, in Hitchin… every summer to view and pick the lovely lavender and sun flowers. Therapeutic Day. Not expensive for entrance either. Restaurant, Cafe and shops, most enjoyable. June 2025

The air is heavy with the calming, herbal fragrance of fresh lavender, which instantly soothes the mind and lifts the spirit. There’s a quiet stillness to the field, broken only by the gentle hum of bees lazily drifting from bloom to bloom. It’s an ideal spot for slowing down, breathing deeply, and reconnecting with nature.

Excellent experience. Very well maintained. Such a beautiful place. Very reasonable entry fees. The staffs a friendly. Highly recommended in summer time. Read the instructions carefully before collecting lavender. The sunflower field will amaze you for sure. It is very well connected by road. I visited in August. I hope to visit this place again this year.

Beautiful lavender farm with tea shop, gift shop, lavender museum, food stalls and parking.

Pros:-
- on a hot summer day its heaven on earth, with the breeze across the hill wafting the scent of lavender everywhere
-sunflowers (later in the summer)
- you can pick lavender to take home (there is a charge for bags and scissors, best to bring your own)
- Great place to take photos, very Instagram chic.
- peaceful, not much road noise, just the sound of trains now and then.
- lavender plants for sale, who knew there are so many different varieties of lavender?
- good cakes

Cons
- best to book ahead, if you're coming from a distance, as it can get busy at the weekends, but you can just turn up on the day and visit the tea shop - if it's too busy you won't be able to get in the main field)
- not for you if you don't like bumblebees - every bush seems to have a few bees buzzing round it (personally this is a plus point for me 🐝)
- a bit pricey - but hardly surprising as its so close to london.
- coffee isn't the world's greatest, could do with improvement, tastes like instant.

Everything considered its still a great day out in the English countryside.

A lovely peaceful place for a brief gentle stroll but not a great deal to it. Would have been nice to bring a picnic to make more of it as a venue but we were easily done in an hour.

Massive place. Lots of lavender and they have a seating space as well. They also have lavender ice cream. Toilet is also okay. You can cut the lavender with scissors and have a bag (you just need to pay for the rent) and ensure you cut the sides only. It was a fair weather when we went there and we enjoyed it.

I’d heard the pumpkin picking was “just a few pumpkins chucked in a field” but I disagree. They’ve really put a lot of effort into the decorations - the cafe area and pumpkin field looked fab. This isn’t the place to go if you just want to grab a pumpkin, it’s an autumnal photo op / experience. Having said that, there’s a huge range of pumpkins to choose from in all sorts of colours, and some really good quality ones. We struggled to choose our favourite to take home!

A few things to be aware of to manage expectations. The pumpkins are not still on the vine so you don’t really know if they were grown locally, compared to some places where they literally cut it off in front of you. But it means you can pick them up for photos and there’s no waiting around for someone to cut it off for you. Also be aware that the parking gets very muddy, I saw a car skidding on the mud. Not really much you can do about it as there are no other parking options.

The only thing I’d change is the price - paying £4 an adult just to get in then up to £6.50 per pumpkin is pretty pricey. It would be good if the entrance cost could be taken off the price of the pumpkin. We did have a good time overall though and were there for a good 2-3 hours, between the pumpkin field and a trip to the cafe.
