I'm not a gardener by any stretch of imagination but I love coming to Great Dixter. I've been in the house too but for me it's the garden that is magical. I wouldn't call it a wild garden but it's not manicured & it feels like it's been allowed to let loose. There's a huge amount of insect life & it's great to see bees busy doing there work.

There is a cafe, which although basic in terms of what it offers, does really delicious food. I wonder if they use a lot of ingredients grown on site.

Come for the day & spend some time reconnecting with nature!

A riot of colour in 4 courts along with a meadow, nursery, and cafe. Didn't visit the house only the gardens. Parking is, let's say challenging. All higgledy-piggledy all over the place. The paths are narrow and uneven so wear appropriate clothing and shoes. Toilets are outside of the garden uphill so best to go before enjoying the garden or house.

Had a lovely tour of the Lutyens house (which run on specific days but definatley worth booking!). Very informative guides and such a special house. A treat for arts and crafts fans like myself. Even had coffee and biscuits is the kitchen. Garden an inspiration. So many birds and insects. So nice to see gardening that embraces wildlife!!

One of the great gardens of England. in my opinion arguably the best. maintains interest throughout the year and is crammed full of interesting plants in a glorious riot of colour. if that is not enough the house is a to die for half timbered farmhouse with outbuildings to match. add to this a nursery that features the plants you can see in the garden but for sale. Lots of more unusual perennials that you will not get in your local garden centre at very reasonable prices. Most. Will have been propagated on site.

I’ve been coming to this garden for over 25 years! It’s always a joyful experience a riot of colour and iconic views. It’s far less primped than it used to be and the jungle garden is still stunning. Every part of the garden was awash with flowers in June and even in mid September it is a riot of colour and texture. The cafe is excellent serving delicious homemade food and locally sourced produce.
There is a lovely circular walk nearby too.

We visited Dixter on our way to Rye.
The gardens are stunning, beautifully well kept lots to see.
Definitely need a dry day as the gardens are the main attraction.
The house is small and not a great deal to see but very pleasant.
If you’re looking for a new plant then theres plenty to choose from a huge selection.
Only disappointment was the cafe.
They had run out of a-lot of food at 1pm! Which is not a late for lunch, and considering it only opens at 11am
There was no soup or meat boards left, couple of croissants left but looked like they had been sitting there a while.
I do think early on in the week you would be well stocked up and prepared for visitors. So that was disappointing.
Our overall visit was about an hour. And half.
Worth a visit if you’re passing through.
