An absolute hidden gem! One of the most beautiful garden to visit in Yorkshire!! Plenty of interest everywhere you looked. There’s lots of different areas to wander and seating in places to marvel at the fantastic handiwork.
The cafe had seating both inside and out with a good selection of food and drink. Plenty of parking spaces alongside a gift shop and plant nursery.
Highly recommend visiting if you love gardens!!!

A truly magical gem that surprises and delights.
One of the most peaceful and restorative spaces I've had the pleasure to spend time in.
This place couldn't fail to bring joy to all who visit.
The sheer pleasure of being immersed in such a tranquil space can be seen on the faces of every single volunteer.
It's a little escape from the hustle and bustle of life beyond the gate.

York Gate is a delightful one-acre Grade II National Heritage Garden created by the Spencer family. It delights with a succession of linked gardens (or "rooms"as they are known) which take their design inspiration from the Arts and Crafts movement and were developed thanks to the horticultural skills of its owner Sybil Spencer and developed between 1951 and 1994. Each individual "room" has its own beauty and interest, with a wealth of plants, shrubs and trees, some immediately recognisable, others much more exotic! There are several water features and unusual structures and stonework, a meadow with beehives plus varied and intricate pathways linking the different "rooms". I was fortunate to visit as part of a National Trust garden volunteer's group and had the benefit of a guided tour given by the affable and knowledgeable Head Gardener, who explained how the garden has evolved and continues to do so. There is also a cafe, shop and plant nursery on the site.
It is most definitely worth a visit and cannot fail to impress and inspire!

Wonderful garden, packed with so many ideas and inspiration. The various garden areas each had their own identity but worked as a whole too. Health of plants and maintenance was top quality. The volunteer tour gave a very interesting talk and the cafe was the finishing touch with a delicious lunch.

Visited here for the first time. What a beautiful garden with plants we've never seen before, a meadow with around 10 beehives, and a lovely cafe. A real gem, we will visit again next year. Cheers guys.

A small perfectly formed garden of different ‘rooms’ ranging from dry succulents to lush exotics. The garden is immaculately maintained and a joy to visit.
Lots to inspire and the nursery is excellent for herbaceous plants. The cafe is good too and all the staff are exceptionally friendly.

Absolutely beautiful garden, spent a lovely chilled few hours with mum wandering round and having a tasty light lunch at the cafe. All staff were so friendly & helpful. The paths are, by design, a little uneven, so mum had to take it slow, but there are plenty of seats dotted round to rest and take in the gorgeous vistas.

A nice interesting garden with cafe and shop. Also plant sales. The car park has good bicycle parking and reinforced grass parking for cars. The cafe, staffed by volunteers has attentive service and the food was good and reasonably priced. Nice gardens even on a cold overcast April day. Worth getting a season ticket and returning at different times of the year !
