About Chatsworth House

Chatsworth House is a masterpiece of English baroque architecture, built between 1687 and 1707 by the renowned architect William Talman for the 6th Earl of Devonshire, William Cavendish. Over the centuries, the estate has been expanded and embellished by successive generations of the Cavendish family, who continue to live in a part of the house.

The house is renowned for its magnificent art collection, which includes works by Rembrandt, Reynolds, Constable, and Turner, as well as the famous Portland Vase. The collection is displayed in sumptuously furnished rooms, each with its own unique character and story.

In addition to the house, Chatsworth is famous for its breathtaking 100-acre garden, designed by some of the most renowned landscape architects of the 18th and 19th centuries. Highlights include the Emperor Fountain, the Great Cascade, and the Rock Garden. The garden is a living testament to the Cavendish family's passion for horticulture and natural beauty.

The farmyard at Chatsworth is another popular attraction, offering visitors the chance to meet farm animals, watch traditional crafts being demonstrated, and explore the historical Grotto and Stumpery. The farmyard is a delightful, hands-on experience for children and adults alike.

Chatsworth is not only a private home but also a significant historical landmark and a popular wedding venue. The house and grounds have been the setting for numerous high-profile events, including the annual Chatsworth Arts Festival and the Chatsworth Horse Trials.

Superb day out very relaxed visit,no rush through the house plenty of time to take in the stunning interior and equally the amazing outside. Gardens are magnificent and so much to see,we will have to return to finish the gardens. Worth the money for both experiences.

Got the garden and farmyard ticket (bear in mind tickets a little cheaper during the week) and had a lovely walk, petted the guinea pigs and goats, walked to the grotto which I highly recommend. In the springtime it looks like a fairytale. Food and drink quite expensive though (two cups of tea £7)

Great experience. Worth the ticket price, but book ahead to get the time you want and avoid extra charges. Beautiful grounds, great shop and food options. Recommend getting there early to get the first time a lot through the house to avoid crowds and to have enough time to see the grounds.

It could be an all day event if you want to explore the grounds. We were disappointed that we had to leave by a certain time so we could not explore as much as we wanted.

The house is beautiful - I’ve only ever been inside the house at Christmas time. But the displays and art were beautiful. The grounds as always were beautifully maintained.

Food in the cafe was ok - very expensive for what it is. My only comment would be that staff should ask if you have a friends card to get the extra 10% off when ordering food or purchasing items from the shops as it’s easy to forget .

How to begin..

Beautiful but that doesn't do this estate justice, and this rating is without seeing around the house or fully exploring just the main grounds

The house from the outside is exquisitely sculptured and marbled stone, not sure but looked a little like sandstone and limestone?

The grounds are vast with many things to dazzle and intrigue, from the great rock garden to the hedge maze

Not to mention the grand list of exotic trees from around the world including a selection of Giant Redwoods

And if that isn't enough there is the odd waterfall and water feature including a gravity fountain

I could go on about this amazing and beautiful place, but one thing that is for certain is we WILL be back we especially want to visit come Christmas

If you haven't been go, if you haven't planned it add it to your bucket list

Certainly one if not the best stately estate I've been to ❤️

A beautiful house and gardens. We booked a private tour and I have to say it was worth every penny. Gary (our guide) was very knowledgeable and an excellent guide.

An insight into how the "Other Half" lived through the centuries.

Have lived in Sheffield for 25 years & frequently go to Chatsworth but have never been in the Gardens & we did this time. I was absolutely blown away, it was so gorgeous & all the different areas so interesting, really enjoyed it. It's huge but so well looked after, highly recommend a visit there.

I went to Chatsworth House with friends for a day out, and it was such a lovely experience! We took the bus from Chesterfield—it was super easy and convenient to get there.

Although we didn’t go inside the palace, the outside was absolutely beautiful, surrounded by stunning countryside views. The grounds are perfect for walking or light hiking, with plenty of scenic spots to relax and take photos.

Highly recommend it for a peaceful escape or a fun day trip with friends. Definitely worth a visit !!
