I ordered a steak pie for our New Year family dinner. It was a delight to deal with the guys at Mathiesons, from placing the order to collecting it and getting full advice on heating the pie to perfection. And perfection is exactly what it was. Delicious! The steak in the pie was incredibly tender and tasty. The pastry topping was really great too. The best steak pie in our opinion. Thank you for making our New Year’s Day dinner special.

Steak pies are simply not what they were! The gravy is as if poured in as an after thought with no meat fibres in it. The top is flat as the young bucks don’t even know to put a hole in the middle to let the steam out so it’s sadly much more slimy under the crust. The meat is superb and of high quality but less than there used to be. The large size is much smaller than it used to be and for £11 plus compared to three years ago £8-9 you’d expect at least the same. Arrgghhh the greatest steak pie in Edinburgh is now just an average steak pie. Get those young lads trained as in life it really is the little touches and things that make the difference

I have consistently used this butchers for over 45years. Always enjoyed excellent service, banter and produce, however, having just sampled one of their individual steak pies, which were always delicious, this one wasn’t.
Far, far too much dry pastry and very little actual meat. A couple of pieces and quite a lot of mush.
Tremendously disappointed.

Very helpful and kind. Though they were unable to procure a whole turkey for me, they followed through with a beautiful crown of breast meat that was honestly better than any whole turkey I've had before. I'll definitely be ordering one again for Christmas!

Also, their steak pies and mince pies are to die for, absolutely worth stopping in for one.

Proper butchers! Stunning meat! Never once found grizzle or fat in the steak pie which are the best in Edinburgh! Only thing to remember is make extra gravy or buy a pot of theirs. Sausages are lovely also. If you’ve only ever had supermarket bacon then truly you should try fresh cut non water pumped bacon from this butcher as so tasty!!! They make their own mince pies which are perfect and again always decently filled and NEVER grizzly!!!

Great range 👍. Sausages to Venison steaks to Rabbit to black pudding.. Haggis.. etc. Always top stuff.
Be ready to buy a lot... Superb.
