Unique experience during a visit to an old running windmill and its passionate owner. I visited lots of old historical sites across Europe but this one was like a real journey in time when I stepped inside and met its friendly owner.
Tip: take some cash [5£] if you like to buy a big bag of traditionally milled flour. We made pancakes so far but it's also great for bread and many other things like pasta, dumplings etc.

Time travel experience.
We visited Whissendene Windmill on a cool, cloudy January. Sadly not windy enough for the mill to be in sail but the clouds of flour dust billowing out of the door told us that it was working.
Following the instructions on the sign by the door I rang the bell to summon Nigel the miller.
He appeared like a white apparition, like a time traveller, to impart his immense knowledge about the mill and its history. Absolutely remarkable.
I climbed up the dusty rickety steps to investigate the workings grinding away. Belts driving ancient machinery. The sounds of the mill wheels, truly atmospheric.

Amazing quality flour: rye, spelt, whole-wheat, white strong bread flour. Great prices.
And what's the most important Nigel is kind, warm human- always asking if you want to go up the mill, any problems with sourdough- he knows best or will tell you where to find an answer.
Best place of you're looking for organic flour and some knowledge about it.

Visited this mill many times over the years since Nigel bought and restored it. All flour organic and certainly ground by stones (unlike some other mills) usually wind but with electric back up. Slightly alarmed by the incorrect statement by another reviewer about a plate mill and seeing no mill stone (clearly blind or ignorant?), I've never see one on site let alone Nigel using one! The mill only has 4 pairs of stones on the stone floor (same as balcony) for grinding!

The wholemeal flour is absolutely divine. 100/100. Best wholemeal.i have eaten. It doesn't taste bitter like the shop ones. I am definitely going back here. Please support local businesses. Nigel works super hard running this place on his own. Please keep british windmills going. Highly recommended. I will be telling all my friends about this place. Even though I want to keep it as my little secret. Keep up the amazing job you do Nigel.

Gem of a place! Called for a look at just before 9am and although early Nigel the Miller still came out and opened up so we could see it properly. This is a working mill and Nigel is a lovely man, very friendly and informative, eeking a living from this marvelous tucked away little place. We'll worth gettg a bit dusty for!

A wonderful experience for 3 generations - we were all fascinated by the whole process and the patience and kindness Nigel showed to us, especially in answering questions from the children. We are now looking forward to baking cakes and bread with the bags of flour we brought.
